How to claim on a Safrican funeral policy

Lodge the claim on the deceased’s funeral policy by calling 011 778 8000, emailing safclaims@safrican.co.za, visiting a branch, or completing the online claim form on the Claims page. Safrican asks for:

  • the Safrican claim notification form, fully completed and signed by the claimant;
  • a certified copy of the death certificate, and the BI-1663 notice of death;
  • certified copies of the principal member’s, the deceased’s and the claimant’s ID documents;
  • a copy of the member’s application form, where applicable;
  • proof of the beneficiary’s bank details (a stamped bank statement no older than three months);
  • a SAPS statement, only for a death from unnatural causes.

Copies must be certified by a Commissioner of Oaths. Safrican notifies you when it receives the claim, reviews the documents, captures the claim and pays the beneficiary’s bank account, then sends proof of payment. It may ask for further documents.

It says it covers more than 1 million principal lives and more than 7 million lives assured. It set up operations in Eswatini in 2012, reached R1 billion in premium income in a year in 2017 and merged with African Rainbow Life (ARL) in 2021. Safrican’s FAQ on the merger says ARL customers’ policies remain in force and their benefits continue to be honoured. The company is a Level 1 B-BBEE contributor. It says most of its employees grew up in a stokvel culture and that it knows funeral needs in townships and rural areas first-hand.
