This is a firm rule, not a gap we intend to fill. If the name belongs to a business that trades under a person’s name, search for its registered company name instead. A registered business publishes its own contact details, and those are the ones we would list.

- For a legal matter, the correct route is through a legal practitioner or the court where the matter is registered, using the case number.
- For a safety matter or a crime, contact the police in the country concerned. A directory is not a route to anyone in an emergency.
- For a debt or a business dispute, the contact details on the contract, invoice or agreement are the ones that apply.
Why this holds even when the reason is a good one
Most people looking for someone’s number have an ordinary reason: a debt, a delivery, a dispute, a family matter. The problem is that a directory cannot tell the difference between those reasons and the ones that end in harassment, stalking or fraud, and the person being looked up gets no say either way. A published personal number cannot be recalled once search engines and directory sites have copied it.
There is also a legal dimension. In South Africa the Protection of Personal Information Act governs how personal information may be collected and published, and a person’s contact details are personal information. A directory that published them on request, without the person’s knowledge, would be on the wrong side of both the law and basic fairness.
