Absa home loan payment relief options

  • Arrears arrangements: settle your arrears in one month or over six months, with payment solutions tailored to your obligations.
  • Forbearance (partial payments): if your home loan is older than nine months and you meet the affordability criteria, you can apply to pay a reduced amount for up to six months while Absa explores a long-term solution, and Absa helps you set up a debit order.
  • Term extension: Absa can extend your home loan term up to 360 months to reduce your monthly repayment; any arrears are added to your outstanding balance.
  • HelpUSell: if you can no longer afford the property, Absa’s agents value, list and market it. Absa advertises up to 50% off your home loan shortfall and help with moving and legal fees (Ts and Cs apply).

Absa car payment relief

Absa’s vehicle finance “debt-free journey” page explains that if Absa cannot collect your instalment, interventions are put in place to stop non-payment building up, and it lists the options: short-term arrangements, a loan restructure, letting Absa “HelpUSell” your vehicle, or voluntary surrender. With voluntary surrender, you sign a voluntary termination document authorising Absa to sell the car, but the car is security for the loan and you stay liable for any shortfall after the sale. To avoid repossession, the FASTBuy HelpUSell process lets you market and sell your car to one of Absa’s approved dealers, if you meet the criteria. For new vehicle finance, the same page lists 0860 669 669, and Islamic Vehicle Finance 0860 000 786.

Free tools in the Absa Banking App

In the Absa Banking App, go to Offers, then the Tools tab, to open Absa Savings Coach. Absa Credit Coach lets you check your TransUnion score for free, get tips for your situation, find and pay overdue accounts, and ask credit questions. Customers under debt review can use the Absa Solutions Account, a basic account with a flat monthly fee for basic services.

What you need before contacting

Before you call, have your home loan account number, ID number, and a clear picture of your income and monthly expenses ready, because Absa bases payment plans on your affordability.

Criteria to qualify for Absa payment relief

Absa publishes these conditions on its pages. Forbearance and the reduced-repayment plan are for home loans older than nine months, and forbearance also requires you to meet Absa’s affordability criteria. FASTBuy HelpUSell is available if you meet its qualifying criteria. Absa’s debt management page suggests checking three warning signs: debit orders being returned or missed payments, using credit cards or loans to pay debt instalments, or having stopped paying debt completely. If any apply, Absa says it can help you manage your debt.

For HelpUSell you must sign a mandate so Absa can appoint agents, and keep the property maintained while it is on the market. You remain liable for the sale and transfer costs, including outstanding rates, taxes and levies, agent’s commission, bond cancellation and any legal costs.

Step-by-step contact process

How can I call Absa payment relief?

  1. Contact Absa as soon as possible: Absa says the sooner you act, the better. For a home loan, call 0861 222 272 locally or 011 221 0200 internationally, during the hours above, or email bondrs@absa.africa. The “Trouble with repayments” page also has a Call me back option.
  2. Ask which option fits your affordability: an arrears arrangement, forbearance, a term extension or HelpUSell. If you received or accepted a HelpUSell offer, email it to privatesales@absa.co.za with proof of the buyer’s finance.
  3. For vehicle finance, call Absa to discuss solutions, or sell your car through FASTBuy HelpUSell on 0860 789 555 or FASTBuyHUS@absa.africa.

Escalation route

Absa’s debt pages say to negotiate with your credit provider first. If Absa cannot agree lower instalments with you, contact a registered debt counsellor before legal action is taken; the National Credit Regulator on 0860 627 627 can help you find one.
