There is more than one facility in Kathu that people call “the family clinic”, and they are not the same thing. The Private Family Health and Wellness Centre, based at Lenmed Private Hospital Kathu, is on 053 723 1669 or 082 590 4440. A separate private practice, Kathu Family Care Clinic, operates from Rietbok Street. There is also a public Kathu Clinic, run by the Northern Cape Department of Health, which is the one to use if you need means-tested rather than privately billed care.

ContactDetails.co.za is an independent directory. We are not any of these facilities. This page exists because choosing the wrong one here is the difference between a bill and a means-tested fee.

If this is an emergency

Call 10177 for an ambulance, or 112 from any mobile phone. Both are free and work nationally. A clinic, whether private or public, is not an emergency unit. Kathu does have a private hospital, and in a serious emergency the dispatcher decides where someone is taken, which is the right way for that decision to be made.

Private or public, decide before you go

Kathu is a mining town, and a substantial share of the population has employer-provided medical scheme cover. That is why private primary care is unusually well provided here for a town of its size, and it is also why the distinction catches out people who do not have cover.

What the private centre offers

The Private Family Health and Wellness Centre lists pregnancy care and obstetrics, women’s health and gynaecology, infertility treatment, paediatric care, minor and major surgery, men’s health, pain management, health screening, mental wellbeing, and nutritional counselling.

Its hours are the practical advantage. Monday to Saturday from seven in the morning until late, with walk-ins accepted and same-day appointments offered. For a shift worker in a mining town, a facility that opens at seven and runs on a Saturday is worth more than a shorter list of services elsewhere. It is closed on Sundays, so plan around that.

Telling the facilities apart

When you phone, say which one you mean. “The family clinic in Kathu” is genuinely ambiguous, and an appointment slip carrying only that phrase does not settle it either.

What to bring

Complaints

  1. Raise it with the practice or clinic first and get a reference number.
  2. For a public facility, escalate to the Northern Cape provincial government on 053 030 0800.
  3. Then the Health Ombud on 080 911 6472, which investigates the standard of care at any health establishment, private facilities included.
  4. Conduct or billing by a named practitioner goes to the HPCSA, which registers doctors and sets rules on what they may charge and how they must disclose it.
  5. A rejected medical scheme claim goes to the Council for Medical Schemes on 086 112 3267, after your scheme’s own dispute process.
