Migration fraud, and how it is pitched
- An organisation’s name and logo are easily copied. Verify anything you are sent against the organisation’s own official website.
- No legitimate body asks for a fee by mobile money or EFT to an individual to process resettlement, a visa or employment abroad.
- Never surrender your passport to a recruiter or a fixer. This is the central mechanism of trafficking and of debt bondage.
- An offer that requires travelling first and signing later is the warning, not the opportunity. Insist on a written contract you have read before you leave.
Where migrants can get help
Visas and permits are issued only by the government of the destination country, through its own mission or official application centre. Refugee and asylum matters in South Africa are handled by the Department of Home Affairs, on 0800 60 11 90, and applying is free.
If you are in South Africa and suspect trafficking or exploitation, report it to the police on 10111. Those South African numbers do not operate in Zimbabwe; confirm local emergency numbers locally. Verified 25 August 2026.
