If Nedbank collections is calling about a credit card, the number you want is not the one calling you. Nedbank publishes a debt assistance route that exists to restructure an account before it hardens into a legal matter, and it sits on a different line from the general contact centre. Calling the right one first is what keeps the conversation about a payment arrangement rather than about a listing.

Task scope

This covers a Nedbank credit card that is in arrears, a call received from collections, or a decision to restructure before falling behind at all. It does not cover a disputed transaction or a lost or stolen card, which run on the separate card lines, and it does not cover a fraud report, which is urgent and handled differently.

Route

One thing to know before you go looking yourself. The debt assistance landing page publishes no telephone number at all; the two numbers above appear on the restructure page beneath it. Anything resembling a long number in the source of that landing page is an advertising or analytics identifier rather than a line that connects, so do not dial a string found there.

Requirements

Have the credit card account number in front of you before you call, along with a clear account of what changed in your circumstances and what you can realistically pay each month. The conversation is about affordability, and a figure you cannot sustain simply produces a second broken arrangement.

Nedbank states the trade-off in restructuring openly on its own page, and it is worth weighing before you agree to anything. Lowering the instalment means you may pay more interest over the life of the debt. The bank pairs that with the point that you can always pay extra in future once your finances are back on track, which is the part most people forget: a restructured account is not fixed at the lower payment, and paying above it later is what recovers the interest you gave away.

Steps

The written confirmation is the step people skip and the one that matters. Collections and the debt assistance team are different functions, and a verbal arrangement that exists only in one system is what produces the call you thought you had already dealt with.

Escalation

Inside the bank, go from the debt assistance line to the Client Complaints Helpline on 0860 444 000. Outside it, a banking or credit complaint that Nedbank has not resolved goes to the National Financial Ombud Scheme South Africa on share call 0860 800 900 or at [email protected]. The National Credit Regulator oversees registered credit providers and debt counsellors, and is the right body where the complaint is about the conduct of credit itself rather than about service.

One distinction is worth being clear about, because Nedbank lists both as options on the same page and they are not the same kind of thing. A restructure is an arrangement with the bank, agreed between you and Nedbank, and reversible by agreement. Debt counselling is a formal process under the National Credit Act, carried out by a registered debt counsellor rather than by the bank, and entering it changes your legal position and restricts your access to new credit while it runs. Both may be the right answer, but only one of them is simply a phone call.
