Nedbank publishes no contact for a home loans legal department, and looking for one is usually a sign that something specific has already happened. Three quite different things get called legal on a home loan, and they are handled by three different parties, only one of which is the bank. Working out which one applies to you is what decides the number to dial.
Task scope
This covers a Nedbank bond in arrears, legal steps taken on a home loan, and the attorney costs and processes attached to registering or transferring one. It does not cover applying for a home loan, which runs through the ordinary application route, and it does not cover a property dispute with a seller or a neighbour, which is not a bank matter at all.
Route
- Nedbank Contact Centre, tollfree and 24 hours: 0800 555 111
- Debt assistance and restructure, before legal steps begin: 0801 114 949
- Your own banker, or the banker line: 0861 100 033
- Client Complaints Helpline: 0860 444 000, or +27 11 710 4011 from outside South Africa
- Head office: Nedbank Group Limited, 135 Rivonia Road, Sandown, 2196, on +27 10 224 8000
None of those is a legal department line, because the bank does not publish one. Legal matters are routed through whichever department already holds the account, or through the attorneys instructed on the file, rather than through a public legal number.
Requirements
Before you call anyone, establish which of these three you are actually dealing with. Nedbank sets the first two out in its own home loan cost breakdown:
- Bond registration attorneys, who register the bond over the title deed of the property. The bond registration cost is their fee, and they are a law firm instructed for the transaction rather than Nedbank employees
- Transferring attorneys, who transfer the property into your name, separate again from the registration firm, with the deeds office fee paid on top
- Instructed litigation attorneys, where a bond has fallen into default and the bank has appointed a firm to act on the account
The third case is the one people are usually searching for, and it is the one with no Nedbank number attached. Once a matter has been handed to instructed attorneys, that firm acts on the bank instruction and the correspondence runs through them. If you have received a letter of demand or a summons, the firm named on that document is your contact, together with the reference it quotes. There is no separate bank legal desk sitting behind them.
Steps
- If the bond is behind but nothing legal has happened yet, call 0801 114 949 and ask about restructuring while that is still available
- If a letter of demand or summons has arrived, note the attorney firm, the reference and the date, and respond within the period stated on the document
- Call Nedbank on 0800 555 111 in parallel to confirm the account balance and what the bank is willing to accept
- Get any arrangement confirmed in writing, and ask specifically whether it halts the legal process or simply runs alongside it
- If selling is the better option, Nedbank lists assisted sales among its published debt assistance routes
The fourth step is the one that catches people out. An arrangement with the collections side of the bank does not automatically stop proceedings that have already been instructed, and the two are handled by different parties. Ask the question directly and get the answer in writing.
Do not wait on a returned call while a dated document sits unanswered. Court timelines run from the date printed on the paper, not from the day the bank gets back to you.
Escalation
For service failures, the Client Complaints Helpline on 0860 444 000 is the internal step, and the National Financial Ombud Scheme South Africa on share call 0860 800 900 or at [email protected] is the external one. Where the complaint concerns how credit was granted or administered rather than service, the National Credit Regulator is the appropriate body.
One limit matters more than any of those numbers. A complaint to an ombud does not pause court proceedings. If a summons has been issued, the deadline on it keeps running whatever else you have lodged, which makes legal advice on the document itself a separate and more urgent step than any complaint about the bank conduct.
Debt counselling is also worth understanding before choosing it. It is a formal process under the National Credit Act run by a registered debt counsellor rather than by the bank, and entering it changes your legal position and restricts new credit while it runs. For a home loan in particular it is a decision to take advice on rather than to make on a phone call.
