What this organisation provides

The system splits new retirement contributions made after 1 September 2024: one third goes to a Savings Pot you can reach before retirement, and two thirds to a Retirement Pot preserved until your retirement date. Savings built up before that date are ringfenced as the Vested Pot and keep the old rules. To start the system, a once-off transfer of 10 percent of your existing retirement savings, capped at R30,000, was moved into the Savings Pot.

It applies to anyone with a pension fund, provident fund, retirement annuity or preservation fund. The minimum withdrawal is R2,000 and you may withdraw only once in a tax year, which runs from 1 March to 28 February. An administration fee is charged and the amount is taxed at your marginal rate, so what reaches your account is less than the figure you request. Old Mutual publishes its explanatory material in English, isiXhosa, isiZulu, Sesotho and Afrikaans.

Because the request is made by WhatsApp, Old Mutual must hold your current cell number, and you update it through the Old Mutual App or Secure Services before making the request. One narrow exception is worth knowing: if you have less than R2,000 in your Savings Pot and belong to a provident or pension fund, you can cash the Savings Pot out when you resign, but only if you have not already withdrawn in that same tax year, otherwise the benefit must be preserved. A complaint about a retirement fund goes to the Pension Funds Adjudicator rather than to an insurance ombud.
