Capitec pays an approved funeral claim into a Capitec account immediately, while a payout to another bank takes longer to reflect. That single fact usually decides which account the beneficiary should nominate.
Task scope
This covers claiming on a Capitec funeral cover policy after a death, and activating two benefits on an existing policy. It does not cover a life cover claim or a claim on credit insurance attached to a loan, both of which Capitec runs as separate processes with their own pages.
Route
- Email: InsuranceClaims@capitec.com
- Funeral policy mailbox published on the funeral cover page: FuneralClaims@capitecbank.co.za
- WhatsApp: send the word Hello to the verified number 067 418 9565
- Call the 24 hour Client Care Centre: 0860 10 20 43
- Visit any Capitec branch
Check the domain when typing the claims address. The claims page gives InsuranceClaims@capitec.com, on capitec.com, while the funeral cover page gives FuneralClaims@capitecbank.co.za, on capitecbank.co.za. Both are published by Capitec, but they are different domains and a typo between the two will bounce.
Requirements
For a natural death claim you need the original or a copy of the identity document of the person logging the claim, the identity document of the beneficiary together with their banking details including bank name, account number and branch code if they do not bank with Capitec, and the death certificate. You also need one of two Home Affairs forms, fully completed: the BI-1663, also called DHA 1663, which is the notification of death or stillbirth completed by a doctor, undertaker and informant in order to obtain a death certificate, or the BI-1680, also called DHA 1680, which is the death report issued by the police or another party authorised by Home Affairs once a death has been registered.
An accidental death claim needs everything listed above plus a police report setting out the cause of death. Capitec may also ask for further documents to assess a claim.
Steps
Submit through any one of the routes with the documents together rather than piecemeal, because the claim is only processed once all required documents have been received. Give the beneficiary banking details up front, as that is the most common missing item. If approved, payment is made immediately into a Capitec account; to another bank it will take longer to clear.
Two benefit activations run through the same channels. A newborn premium waiver needs an unabridged birth certificate, a hospital or clinic card, or an adoption letter where applicable. A voluntary policy pause requires no documents at all.
Escalation
If a claim is declined or paid for less than expected, ask for the reason in writing first, because any ombud will want to see it. A dispute about a long term insurance claim then goes to the National Financial Ombud Scheme South Africa on 0860 800 900. Where the complaint is about the advice given when the policy was sold rather than the claim decision, the FAIS Ombud on 012 762 5000 is the right body, and the FSCA regulates market conduct across insurers.
