Bokamoso Ikusasa Burial Scheme is a Johannesburg funeral cover provider operating from Ormonde, south of the city centre. The contact details below are the ones it publishes on its own website, bokamosofuneral.co.za.

The site also carries an enquiry form with four routes to choose from — funeral cover, claims, payment query and request callback — which is the written alternative to phoning.

What the scheme offers

The scheme states that clients are covered once six consecutive premiums have been received, that claims are handled internally rather than outsourced, and that claims are paid within 72 hours of being reported where all requirements are met. It is aimed at individuals, groups, stokvels and churches. It was founded by Mpho Mhlongo and is run with Paul Mavhusha as chief executive.

Check the registration before you pay a premium

This is the part worth pausing on. Anyone selling funeral cover in South Africa has to be an authorised financial services provider, or an appointed representative of one, and the benefit has to be underwritten by a licensed insurer. Bokamoso’s site says it is “fully licensed and insured” and that its policies are “underwritten by insurers we have chosen with care”, but it does not print an FSP number and it does not name the underwriter. Its site also still carries placeholder text in places, including unfilled entries on its own leadership page.

None of this means the scheme is not what it says it is. It means the checks are cheap and the consequence of skipping them — discovering at a funeral that there is no cover — is not.

If a claim is refused

Ask for the refusal in writing with the clause it relies on. Once the scheme’s internal process is done, funeral cover disputes go to the National Financial Ombud Scheme, which handles long-term insurance complaints free of charge. If the provider turns out not to be registered at all, the complaint belongs with the FSCA instead.
