The Mineworkers Provident Fund runs a call centre, a set of walk-in centres including one in Mozambique, and an online unclaimed benefits search. If a benefit complaint is not resolved by the fund, it has a formal route to the Pension Funds Adjudicator that the fund publishes itself.

What this organisation provides

The fund pays retirement, withdrawal and death benefits to mineworkers and their beneficiaries, and publishes its fund rules, investments and financial statements. It also runs an unclaimed benefits search on its member portal, which matters because unclaimed mineworker benefits are a long standing problem: a former member or a dependant can search there before phoning. The call centre operates from 08:00 to 17:00, walk-in centres from 07:30 to 16:30, and the fund offices close at 16:30. Walk-in centres are listed at Braamfontein in Johannesburg, Carletonville at No. 2 Office Park, Uys Buys, corner Kaolin and Radium Street, Witbank at the WCMAS Building on the corner of Susanna and OR Tambo streets, Mthatha at No. 49 Leeds and Craister Street, Metropolitan Place, on 047 531 1833, and Xai Xai in Mozambique on EN1 Avenida Samora Machel. The fund publishes several fax numbers alongside these, so check you are dialling a telephone line.

Support and escalation routes

The fund sets out a two stage complaints process. A member dissatisfied with how their benefits are managed lodges a formal complaint in writing to the Principal Officer, using complaints@mwpf.co.za, and the Principal Officer may address it directly or investigate first. If that does not resolve it, the fund directs members to the Pension Funds Adjudicator, whose details it publishes: Riverwalk Office Park, 41 Matroosberg Road, Ashlea Gardens, PO Box 580, Menlyn, 0063, on 012 346 1738 or enquiries@pfa.org.za. That is an independent statutory office and not a fund number. Fraud or corruption is reported anonymously on the toll free whistle blowing line.
