The Fund’s published operating hours are 07:30 to 16:00, Monday to Friday. The same contacts page links to a list of the heads of the Compensation Fund in each province, dated 2020, which may be out of date.
Services and responsibilities
COIDA is the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act 130 of 1993. According to its service booklet, the Compensation Fund is a Schedule 3A public entity of the Department of Employment and Labour that administers the Act. The Department says the Fund’s main purpose is to pay compensation for disability, illness and death caused by injuries and diseases at work. Its units include medical benefits and orthotic and rehabilitation services.
Gov.za explains that employers must register with the Fund to cover their workers. Workers who are covered include permanent staff, apprentices and trainees, farm workers and people paid through a labour agency. If an employee dies from a work injury or disease, their dependants can claim. Compensation is not paid if the accident is reported to the employer more than 12 months after it happened. If you are off work for three days or less, the Fund pays only medical expenses.

Applications and escalation
- Employers register online through the Department’s online services at cfonline.labour.gov.za. The registration form is also published on gov.za as Form W.As.2.
- To submit claims online, employers first register as a Department of Employment and Labour online user and then register as a user of CompEasy, the Fund’s online claims system. Gov.za says employers must report an employee’s occupational injury within seven days.
- Once an injury on duty has been reported and the required information uploaded, the system issues a claim number. Quote it every time you contact the call centre or the complaints mailbox.
- If you disagree with a decision by the Compensation Commissioner, the Fund’s service booklet says you can object on Form W.G.29, signed by you, within 180 days of the decision.
