The Department of Home Affairs administers South African identity documents, birth, marriage and death registration, passports, citizenship and immigration. The contact details below were read from the departmental contacts directory on 31 August 2026.

Official contact channels

The 0800 prefix makes 60 11 90 genuinely toll-free from a South African landline, and it is the number to use for almost every enquiry. The hacc in the email address stands for Home Affairs Contact Centre.

A note on the departmental contacts directory. Home Affairs publishes a public directory that lists named officials alongside their office and personal mobile numbers, broken down by service area, province and ministerial office. Those are individual public servants rather than service channels, and their direct numbers are not reproduced here. Phoning a named official directly does not move a queued application forward, and those listings change as people move posts. Use the contact centre, which is staffed for the purpose and can log a reference against your application.

Services and responsibilities

Home Affairs is organised around two service streams, and knowing which yours falls under helps at the first prompt:

The department also publishes directories of refugee reception centres, the Lindela holding facility, and a counter corruption and security unit.

Before contacting Home Affairs, have your identity number, the application or reference number issued when you applied, the office where you applied and the date of application. Without the application reference the contact centre cannot trace progress, and that reference is the single most useful thing on your receipt.

Office and address information

Head office is in Pretoria, Gauteng. Beyond that, Home Affairs operates a large office network, and its directory lists offices by province – Eastern Cape, Free State, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Northern Cape, North West and Western Cape – along with provincial managers for each.

A number of Smart ID and passport services are also delivered from participating bank branches rather than from Home Affairs offices, and the department publishes those bank branch lists by province. Gauteng and the Western Cape have the most participating branches. Bank branch appointments are usually booked through the bank rather than through Home Affairs, and they are often faster than a departmental office for a Smart ID or passport renewal.

The department does not publish uniform office hours centrally, and offices close to new applicants before their stated closing time so that those already queuing can be served. Arrive early rather than late, and confirm the specific office before travelling.

Applications and escalation

Log the complaint with the contact centre on 0800 60 11 90 or [email protected], quote your application reference, and record the date and the reference the centre gives you. Follow up in writing so there is a dated trail.

Home Affairs runs a counter corruption and security unit for reporting bribery, document fraud or misconduct – anyone soliciting payment to speed up an application should be reported there rather than paid.

If the department does not resolve the matter, maladministration by an organ of state is investigated by the Public Protector:
