There is no public clinic called Cuyler Clinic. Cuyler Street in Kariega, formerly Uitenhage, is the address of Netcare Cuyler Hospital, a private hospital with a 24 hour emergency department, and of a building housing private pathology laboratories. Netcare does not publish a direct switchboard for this hospital, so the confirmed routes are its national appointment line on 0860 555 565 and, for an emergency, 10177 or 112.
ContactDetails.co.za is an independent directory. We are not Netcare, a laboratory or the Eastern Cape Department of Health. This page exists because “Cuyler Clinic” means several different things, and picking the wrong one wastes a trip.
If this is an emergency
Call 10177 for an ambulance, or 112 from any mobile phone. Both are free, both work nationally, and neither depends on knowing which facility you need. Netcare Cuyler Hospital has run a 24 hour emergency department since 2017, so it is a valid destination once transport is arranged, but a hospital line is not a dispatch line.

Three different things on Cuyler Street
- Netcare Cuyler Hospital. A private hospital with a 24 hour emergency department, serving Kariega and Despatch. Treatment is billed to you or your medical scheme.
- A building referred to as Cuyler Clinic. Private pathology laboratories operate from a Cuyler Street address under that name. If you were sent for blood tests, this is probably where you are going, and the laboratory group named on your form is who you should phone.
- Public clinics in Kariega. These are run by the Eastern Cape Department of Health and are unrelated to Netcare. If you are looking for free or means-tested primary care, a Netcare number will not help you. Use the provincial call centre above.
The distinction that matters most is public versus private. Arriving at a private hospital expecting means-tested public fees is the most expensive version of this mistake.
Uitenhage is now Kariega
The town was officially renamed Kariega in 2021, as part of the same round of changes that renamed Port Elizabeth to Gqeberha. Both names remain in daily use, and official systems have moved over at different speeds.
- Search official directories under both names. Some list Kariega, some still list Uitenhage, and a few carry the address as “Uitenhage, Kariega”.
- Medical scheme network lists are often the slowest to update. If you are checking whether the hospital is in your scheme’s network, search both.
- Do not assume two entries are two facilities. A directory showing the hospital under both names is usually showing it twice.
Before a planned admission
- Get pre-authorisation from your medical scheme before the date. An unauthorised admission is the usual cause of a rejected claim, and the hospital does not authorise on the scheme’s behalf.
- Check the hospital is in your scheme’s network for the year, searching both Kariega and Uitenhage.
- Expect separate accounts. Specialists practising at a private hospital are generally independent, so the hospital bills for the bed and theatre while the practitioner bills for their own work.
- Bring your identity document, scheme card, authorisation number and referral letter.
If something goes wrong
- Raise it with the hospital and get a reference number.
- Escalate within Netcare through its customer channels.
- Standard of care goes to the Health Ombud on 080 911 6472. The Ombud covers private facilities as well as public ones.
- A rejected claim or scheme dispute goes to the Council for Medical Schemes on 086 112 3267, after your scheme’s internal dispute process.
- A practitioner’s conduct goes to the HPCSA rather than to the hospital or the Ombud.
