Searching “Netcare Umhlanga” can land you at three quite different kinds of facility, and only one of them admits you as a hospital patient. Netcare Umhlanga Hospital is the acute private hospital. Netcare does not publish a direct switchboard for it, so the confirmed route is the national appointment line on 0860 555 565.

ContactDetails.co.za is an independent directory. We are not Netcare.

If this is an emergency

Call 10177 for an ambulance, or 112 from any mobile phone. Netcare’s own emergency medical services customer centre is 0860 638 2273.

Hospital, Medicross or Akeso

Netcare runs three separate types of facility under one brand, and the appointment line books across all of them. Knowing which you need before you call is what makes the call work.

TypeWhat it isDoes it admit you?
Netcare hospitalAcute private hospital with wards and theatresYes, by pre-authorised admission or through an emergency unit
Netcare MedicrossMedical and dental centre, day consultationsNo. It is not a hospital
Netcare AkesoMental health hospitalYes for psychiatric admission, arranged by a psychiatrist. Generally no emergency unit

The Akeso distinction is the one that costs people time. Someone in a mental health crisis sent to an Akeso facility may find no emergency unit there. Acute crisis is stabilised at a hospital emergency unit first, and psychiatric admission follows from that. A Medicross booking, meanwhile, will not get you a hospital bed however urgent it feels.

Say which suburb

Durban has more than one Netcare hospital. Umhlanga is north of the city; Parklands is in Overport. “The Netcare hospital in Durban” does not identify which, and a medical scheme authorisation naming the wrong one is a problem discovered at the admissions desk.

Numbers beginning 031 circulate online for this hospital. We could not open a Netcare page carrying them, so they are not published here.

Complaints

Raise it with the facility and get a reference number, then escalate within Netcare. Standard of care goes to the Health Ombud on 080 911 6472, which covers private facilities. A rejected claim, including a psychiatric benefit dispute, goes to the Council for Medical Schemes on 086 112 3267. A practitioner’s conduct goes to the HPCSA.

Frequently asked questions

What is the number for Netcare Umhlanga Hospital?

Netcare publishes the national appointment line, 0860 555 565, rather than a local switchboard.

Is Medicross a hospital?

No. Medicross centres are day medical and dental centres for consultations. They do not admit patients.

Where does psychiatric admission happen?

At Netcare’s Akeso mental health facilities, arranged by a psychiatrist. They generally have no emergency unit, so an acute crisis goes to a hospital emergency unit first.

Which Netcare hospital is in Durban?

Umhlanga to the north and Parklands in Overport. Give the suburb when confirming an authorisation.

I need public care, not private.

The City of eThekwini runs Durban’s clinics on 080 311 1111, and the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health runs the hospitals on 0800 205 334.
