Driving there from South Africa
The lodge sits on the Trans Kalahari corridor, the main road route between Gauteng and Windhoek through Botswana, which is why it is often used as an overnight stop rather than a destination.
- The route crosses two borders, into Botswana and then into Namibia. Each has its own requirements and its own operating hours, and arriving after closing means waiting until morning.
- Take the vehicle’s registration papers. For a financed car you generally need a letter of authority from the bank, and for a borrowed or hired one a letter from the owner. Without them you can be turned back.
- Cross border road charges and permits are payable at the border, usually in local currency or cash. Do not assume a card will work.
- A child travelling without both parents needs supporting documents. Confirm current requirements before you leave.
- Distances between fuel stops are long and animals stray onto the road. Avoid driving this route at night, and carry water.
South African consumer bodies have no jurisdiction
Namibia is a separate country with its own law. The Consumer Protection Act does not apply, and neither the National Consumer Commission nor the Consumer Goods and Services Ombud can act on a booking made with a Namibian business.
- Pay by card or through a booking platform, so a chargeback or a dispute process stays available. An international transfer leaves you with neither.
- Get the cancellation terms in writing before paying. You cannot fall back on South African rules about reasonable cancellation fees.
- Ask which currency you will be billed in. The Namibian dollar is pegged to the rand and rands are widely accepted in Namibia, but Namibian dollars are not accepted in South Africa, so do not bring change home expecting to spend it.
- Take travel insurance covering medical evacuation. This is a remote area and your South African medical scheme may not cover treatment across the border.
