The first thing to know about applying to Liberty is that you do not apply to Liberty. Liberty is part of the Standard Bank Group, and its own careers page hands you over to the Standard Bank Group recruitment site with a notice saying you are leaving Liberty website. Bookmark that, because the application, the login and any correspondence will carry Standard Bank branding rather than Liberty.

Official contact channels

The two contact centres are listed here so that you do not use them. They handle policies, claims and corporate benefits, and a job enquiry sent there will not reach recruitment. The only careers specific mailbox Liberty publishes is the actuarial one.

There is a weakness in one published route worth knowing about. Applications for actuarial vacation work are directed to a named employee mailbox rather than to a programme address. A personal work address stops working the day that person changes role, so it is not reproduced here. Use ADP@liberty.co.za, which is the durable programme mailbox, and ask to be directed to the vacation work coordinator from there.

What this organisation provides

Liberty states that it employs more than six thousand people across seven businesses in eighteen African countries, so a vacancy may sit outside South Africa even when it is advertised through the group site. The actuarial pipeline is the part it documents in most detail, and it runs in stages that suit different points in a studies.

  • Job shadowing: one to two days, offered twice a year in school holidays, limited space, applications to ADP@liberty.co.za
  • Actuarial vacation work: twice a year, in the June and December university recess
  • Internships: for graduates who need work experience to complete a professional qualification
  • Actuarial Science bursaries: from the second year of full time study

The bursary is the substantial one. Liberty states that it covers tuition, accommodation, meals and a travel allowance where applicable, along with support, networking opportunities and vacation work, and that employment is guaranteed on completion of your studies. The published criteria are continuous excellent academic performance across all first year modules, an overall average above sixty percent with sixty five percent or more for mathematical and actuarial modules, and demonstrated leadership through extramural activities such as sport, debating, chess or olympiads.

Address and operating information

There is no walk in recruitment office and no address to deliver a curriculum vitae to. Everything runs through the group application portal or, for the actuarial programmes, the mailbox above. Because applications are hosted on the Standard Bank Group system, you create one profile there and it carries across group opportunities rather than needing a separate Liberty account.

Support and escalation routes

No legitimate application to Liberty or to Standard Bank Group requires payment. Nobody genuine will ask you for money for an application, a criminal or credit check, a medical, training, a uniform or a placement fee, and no genuine recruiter asks for your banking details or a copy of your card before you have an offer. Financial services recruitment is heavily impersonated because the salaries are credible and the brand is trusted. Apply only through the group site reached from liberty.co.za and treat an approach arriving by WhatsApp or from a free mail address as fraudulent.

Your application contains a large amount of personal information, so the Protection of Personal Information Act applies to how it is handled. You are entitled to know what is held about you and to ask for it to be corrected or deleted, and a request goes to the information officer of the entity that collected it, which for a group application is Standard Bank Group rather than Liberty. If that is not resolved, the Information Regulator handles POPIA complaints. A complaint about the conduct of a licensed financial services provider is a different route again and belongs with the Financial Sector Conduct Authority.
