Reporting an urgent by-law offence
The City routes urgent by-law offences to the Metro Police through Option 1 of its Call Centre on 012 358 9999, which is the same option that reaches Emergency Services. Use the direct TMPD numbers for non-urgent departmental enquiries.
What TMPD handles
- By-law offences such as illegal dumping, noise and illegal trading
- Traffic policing, roadblocks and traffic offences
- Abandoned or illegally parked vehicles
- Visible policing and crime prevention within the metro
TMPD or SAPS
For a crime in progress, or any situation involving immediate danger, call SAPS on 10111 rather than the Metro Police. SAPS handles criminal matters and is where a criminal case is opened. The Metro Police enforce by-laws and traffic law.
Traffic fines and roadside payments
Fines issued by TMPD are queried and paid through the City’s traffic channels rather than the Metro Police switchboard. Officers do not collect fine payments in cash at the roadside, and a demand for an on-the-spot cash payment to avoid a fine is a bribe rather than a lawful process.
