Tracking a parcel in South Africa depends on one thing above all: having the waybill or tracking number the sender was issued. Without it almost no courier can locate a shipment, because their systems are indexed by that number rather than by your name or address.

ContactDetails.co.za is an independent directory. We are not a courier, we cannot trace or release a parcel, and we cannot lodge a claim for you. What this page gives you is the correct order to do things in, and contact routes verified on each courier’s own site.

How to track a parcel

  1. Get the waybill or tracking number from whoever sent the parcel. An online retailer normally emails it when the order ships.
  2. Identify the courier. The waybill format often gives it away, and the sender can confirm it. Tracking a number on the wrong courier’s site returns nothing, which is easily mistaken for a lost parcel.
  3. Enter the number on that courier’s own tracking page. Most South African couriers also accept tracking requests by WhatsApp.
  4. If the status has not changed for several working days, contact the courier directly with the waybill number rather than waiting.

Why tracking sometimes shows nothing

What to do next

If tracking has been static for more than a few working days, call the courier with the waybill number and ask for the current physical location and the reason for the delay. Ask for a reference number for that query, because it is what a later claim will be built on.

Where the sender arranged and paid for the shipment, the courier’s contract is normally with them rather than with you. That often means the sender has to open the trace or lodge the claim, so tell the retailer at the same time as the courier.

Who is responsible: retailer, sender or courier

This is the most common point of confusion in a courier dispute, and getting it right decides who you should be pressing.

Work out which of these applies before you spend time on the wrong party. Where you bought from a retailer, start there and let them pursue the courier, because they hold the account and the commercial relationship.

Avoiding courier scams

Parcel delivery is one of the most heavily impersonated channels in South Africa, because a message about a pending delivery is plausible to almost anyone.

Frequently asked questions

How long before a parcel is officially considered lost?

It varies by courier and by service level, and the period only starts once a trace has been opened. That is why opening the trace promptly matters: the clock on a claim often runs from despatch rather than from the day you noticed the problem.

Can I claim if the sender did not declare the value?

Usually only up to the courier’s standard liability limit, which is typically well below the value of the goods. Declaring value and paying for cover at despatch is what raises that ceiling.

The retailer says it is the courier’s problem and the courier says it is the retailer’s. What now?

Under South African consumer law your contract is with the retailer you bought from, so press the retailer to resolve it. If they will not, the Consumer Goods and Services Ombud handles exactly this kind of dispute at no charge to the consumer.

How long should I give the courier before escalating?

Give them the period they state for a trace or a claim response, and no longer. Ask for that period in writing at the outset so you know when it has expired, then escalate on the date rather than waiting indefinitely for an update that may not come.

Does a signature mean I cannot claim for damage?

It makes it harder, which is why noting visible damage on the delivery note before signing matters. Concealed damage found on opening can still be claimed, but notify the courier the same day and keep the packaging for inspection.

Contact routes on this page were checked against the official sources of each organisation named, during August 2026. Where a detail has changed, that organisation’s own site is always the authority.
