The SASSA Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant is administered by the South African Social Security Agency. This page lists the contact routes SASSA itself publishes for grant enquiries, along with the official self-service portal used for SRD applications and status checks.

Official provider route

The toll-free line is the route SASSA publishes for general grant enquiries, including SRD. The switchboard reaches head office in Pretoria and is not a grant enquiry line, so expect to be transferred if you call it with an SRD question.

One caution about the email address. SASSA’s own website displays [email protected] as text, but the underlying link on that page points at a placeholder address that does not belong to SASSA. Use the address exactly as written above, and do not rely on clicking the link on the SASSA page.

Product or service support

SRD applications, status checks and banking-detail updates run through the dedicated SASSA SRD portal rather than the main agency website. The portal is linked from sassa.gov.za as the official route for SRD applications, and it is the only self-service channel SASSA publishes for this grant.

For anything the portal cannot resolve β€” a rejected application you believe is incorrect, a payment that has not arrived, or an identity mismatch β€” the toll-free enquiries line and the grant enquiries mailbox are the published channels. SASSA does not publish a separate SRD-only phone number.

Eligibility, account or policy requirements

SASSA publishes the SRD qualifying criteria on its own website. In summary, an applicant must be a South African citizen, permanent resident, refugee, asylum seeker with a valid section 22 permit, or the holder of a special permit under the Angolan, Lesotho or Zimbabwe dispensations. Applicants must be between 18 and 60, resident in South Africa, not living in a state-funded institution, not already receiving another social grant for themselves, and must meet the means test.

Applications are assessed monthly rather than once, so an outcome can change from one month to the next without any new application being submitted. That is the usual explanation when a grant is paid in one month and declined in the next, and it is worth checking the portal before calling.

Have your ID number and the mobile number registered against the application ready before you call. SASSA verifies applicants against the Department of Home Affairs database, so the details you give must match your official records.

Escalation route

If the toll-free line and the enquiries mailbox do not resolve the matter, SASSA’s head office is the next step in writing. The postal address is Private Bag X55662, Arcadia, Pretoria 0083, and the physical address is SASSA House, 501 Prodinsa Building, Cnr Steve Biko and Pretorius Streets, Pretoria 0083. Quote your ID number and any reference number you were given on the first call, since escalations without a reference are generally treated as new enquiries.
