Standard Bank does not publish a telephone number or mailbox for a legal department. Contact that people expect to make with bank lawyers runs instead through the complaint resolution centre, or through the attorneys already named on the papers they have received.

Task scope

This covers letters of demand, summonses, judgments and account matters that have moved beyond ordinary collections, as well as requests for documents in a dispute.

Route

Requirements

If you have received a legal document, the attorney firm acting for the bank is named on it, together with a reference number. That firm, not the bank, is the party that can discuss the matter, and quoting their reference is what identifies the file. The bank cannot usually intervene once a matter sits with external attorneys.

Steps

For a complaint about the bank itself, start with the complaint resolution centre using the number or mailbox above. The bank asks for an identity number to route a query; if you prefer not to give it, it directs compliments and queries to 0860 123 000 and [email protected], and complaints to the complaint resolution centre.

Escalation

If the bank does not resolve the matter, a banking complaint goes to the National Financial Ombud on 0860 800 900, and a dispute about a credit agreement, including reckless lending and debt review, goes to the National Credit Regulator on 0860 627 627. Neither can set aside a court order. Note that the number 0800 204 547 published on the same contact page is an anonymous line for reporting unethical behaviour, operated by an outside company through [email protected], and is not a legal or complaints route.
