One oddity worth knowing: WesBank’s own contact page lists those three teams with their operating hours but shows no telephone numbers at all. The 0861 number above comes from the structured business data WesBank publishes with the same page. If the page looks like it is missing something when you open it, that is why.

What you can do without phoning

WesBank’s own advice on its contact page is to check what can be done online before you dial. The account actions it lists are:

  • View your account balance.
  • Download statements.
  • Get a settlement quote.
  • Download a copy of your NaTIS document.
  • Make a payment arrangement.
  • Make a payment to the account.
  • Report a vehicle theft or write-off.

These run through the WesBank app or the account services login on wesbank.co.za, and there is a separate “sign your contract” route for new deals. A settlement quote pulled online is also faster than one requested by phone.

Which finance WesBank actually does

Besides ordinary vehicle finance, WesBank lists private sale finance for buying from an individual, graduate finance, Islamic finance, motorcycle finance, leisure finance for caravans and boats, CashPower, personal loans, solar finance and Guaranteed Future Value deals. On the business side it covers industry-specific finance, small business finance, Islamic business finance, vehicle leasing and fleet solutions.

It also runs vehicle auctions, with online catalogues, bidding rules and a guide to how the auctions work, which is where repossessed and ex-fleet vehicles are sold.

Before you call about a car finance account

  • Have the agreement number from your statement, and the vehicle registration. The account is keyed to the agreement, not to your name.
  • For a settlement, pull the quote online first so you are discussing the same figure the consultant sees, and note that a settlement quote is valid only for a stated period.
  • For a payment arrangement, know what you can pay and from when; arrangements are logged against the account and a missed one usually cancels it.
  • For a theft or write-off, report it through the dedicated account action rather than the general line, and have the SAPS case number.
  • If you bought through a dealer and the deal has not been activated yet, the dealer’s finance and insurance desk is usually faster than WesBank’s own line.

Saturday cover is limited: the account enquiries and new business teams work until 12:00, and business finance does not work Saturdays at all.

Complaints and company details

WesBank publishes a complaints procedure and a compliments route in the support section of its site, alongside its compliance centre, privacy notice and the FirstRand information manual. Requests for records go to the WesBank PAIA office at wesbankpaia@wesbank.co.za, or by post to PO Box 1066, Johannesburg, 2000.

WesBank is a division of FirstRand Bank Limited, a registered bank, an authorised financial services provider and a registered credit provider, NCRCP20, registration number 1929/001225/06.

Watch out for fake WesBank calls

WesBank runs a #ScamProof section covering car auction scams, deposit-to-secure scams, debt collection scams and suspicious calls from someone claiming to be your bank or finance house. The useful habit is the same in all of them: end the call and dial the number yourself.

  • Never pay a “deposit to secure” a vehicle into a personal account.
  • Check any settlement figure in the app or through account services before paying it.
  • WesBank will not ask you for an OTP or a full card number to “verify” an account.
  • If a collector contacts you about a WesBank account, confirm through the account services login who holds it before paying anyone.
