How Budget handles car claims

Budget’s car insurance page says it manages the claims process from start to finish using its own repair partners. It gives a lifetime guarantee on all repairs those partners do. When you claim, you pay the excess upfront to the service provider, such as the panel beater, whoever caused the accident. Your policy schedule sets the amount.

  • Not at fault: you still pay the excess. Budget’s legal recoveries department will try to recover it from the other party at no extra charge. This can take a long time if the other driver is uninsured.
  • Someone drove your car without permission: Budget will pay the claim if you lay a criminal charge against that person with the police within 48 hours. You may not withdraw the charge afterwards.
  • Stolen car with a tracking device: Budget recommends fitting a tracker because it lowers the theft excess.
  • Write-off: Budget pays out the car’s pre-accident value, less the excess and any salvage value.

Excess: what you pay on a claim

Budget’s FAQ describes the excess as the uninsured part of your loss. In most cases Budget charges a flat excess rather than a percentage of the loss. Extra excesses can apply depending on the facts of the claim, for example who was driving at the time. You can lower your excess by paying a higher premium, or lower your premium by accepting a higher excess.

Home claims during load shedding and grid failure

Budget’s FAQ says an electrical grid failure is not an insured peril. Damage that was not a direct result of a grid failure, as defined in your policy, is still covered. Once the grid has been restored, damage to insured property from a power surge is covered again.

Before you call to claim

  • Have your policy number and ID number ready.
  • For theft, hijacking or a car used without your consent, get a police case number.
  • Answer the consultant’s questions honestly. Budget’s FAQ warns that claiming for items you never owned, or reporting a car as hijacked when it was not, is fraud.
  • Keep your premiums up to date. Budget’s FAQ says that if a premium is not received, there is no cover for that period.

Cash Back Bonus and claims

Budget’s optional Cash Back Bonus, which costs extra, pays back 15% of the premiums you paid if you stay claim-free with uninterrupted cover for the first two years. It pays 10% for a further two claim-free years, and then 10% for every claim-free year after that. Budget says it has paid R212 million in Cash Back Bonuses to more than 83,682 customers over the past five years. Making a claim affects this bonus, so check the terms before you claim for a small amount.
