To cancel a Budget Insurance policy, call customer services on 0861 60 01 20. Budget’s FAQ says you can cancel over the phone without any notice period, and that Budget will confirm the cancellation in writing. Budget does not publish a dedicated cancellation email address. Support handles cancellations and is closed on Sundays and public holidays, so call on a weekday or a Saturday morning.
How to cancel a Budget Insurance policy
- Call 0861 60 01 20 and choose the option for existing customers.
- Say whether you want the cancellation to take effect now or on a later date. Budget’s FAQ says you do not have to give any notice, but you can choose a future cancellation date.
- Wait for Budget’s written confirmation of the cancellation and keep it.
- If you have new insurance, make sure it starts before your Budget cover ends so that you are never uninsured.
You can also log in to your Budget account or the Budget app to add or remove cover and download your policy documents. If you only want to lower your premium, removing some cover may be an alternative to cancelling the whole policy.
Refunds when you cancel mid-month
Budget policies are paid monthly, in advance. Budget’s FAQ says that because of this, you do not get a pro rata refund if you cancel partway through a month. Cancelling close to your next debit date, or setting a future cancellation date that matches the end of a paid month, means you do not pay for cover you will not use.
Missed premiums are not a cancellation
Stopping your debit order does not cancel your policy with Budget. Budget’s FAQ explains that if a premium is not received, you have no cover for that period and the policy lapses, but the contract is still in force. To end the contract properly, cancel by phone and get the written confirmation. If you only had trouble paying one month, Budget can arrange a “Special Deduction” on a more convenient date. If that payment is also missed, you have no cover for that period.
Budget Insurance cancellation email address
Budget’s contact page lists no email address for cancellations. It lists policyservices@budgetins.co.za for compliments and complaints, and disputeresolution@budgetins.co.za for claims disputes. If you have trouble cancelling by phone, email policyservices@budgetins.co.za with your policy number, the date you asked to cancel, and the name of the consultant if you have it. For an unresolved complaint, call Complaints Resolution on 0860 00 42 94.
If you are cancelling because of the premium
Budget’s FAQ explains a few things that affect the price and may be worth raising before you cancel:
- Car premiums go up each year because repair and parts costs rise. Budget says it takes the car’s depreciating value into account when it reviews the premium.
- You can lower your premium by choosing a higher excess, or lower your excess by paying a higher premium.
- Fitting a tracking device lowers the theft excess on a stolen vehicle claim.

Its long-term policies are underwritten by 1Life (FSP 24769). For a life policy, ask the Budget consultant whether 1Life handles that cancellation.
