Budget car insurance cover options
Budget’s car cover runs from Comprehensive down to Third-Party Fire and Theft and Third-Party Only. It also sells Budget Lite plans, which it describes as suited to modest budgets, vehicles worth under R250,000 and cars that are paid off. Budget’s own pages count these options differently: one says five options, another says six levels of cover. Ask the consultant on 0861 60 01 20 which plans your car qualifies for. Budget roadside assistance and towing
Roadside Assistance has two parts. Accident Assist is included: if your car cannot be driven, Budget sends a tow truck to the nearest repairer and pays storage for the first 72 hours, as long as you use its authorised tow truck. Breakdown Assist is an optional paid add-on. It covers running out of fuel, keys locked inside the car, a burst tyre or a flat battery, and pays the service provider’s call-out fee plus one hour’s labour.

Budget car insurance claims and policy rules
- Repairs after an accident must be done by a Budget-approved repairer. Budget gives a lifetime guarantee on repairs by its partners.
- An excess is payable on every claim, whoever caused the accident. Budget’s legal recoveries department tries to recover it from the other party at no charge.
- If someone drives your car without permission and crashes it, Budget’s FAQ says the claim is covered provided you lay a criminal charge against that driver with the police within 48 hours, and you may not withdraw the charge.
- A tracking device is not compulsory on comprehensive cover, but Budget says it lowers your theft excess.
- Premiums depend on the make and model, where the car is parked at night, the regular driver, how the car is used and your claims history. Budget says premiums rise each year with repair and parts costs, even as the car loses value.
- If a debit order fails, Budget can arrange a “Special Deduction” on another date. If that payment also fails, you have no cover for that month.
- Insuring more than one car on a policy earns a multi-car discount.
Cancelling a Budget car policy
You can cancel a Budget car policy without a notice period, by phone on 0861 60 01 20, and Budget confirms the cancellation in writing. There is no pro-rata refund for cancelling part way through a month.
