OUTsurance runs three near-identical numbers for three different jobs, and they differ only in the middle digits. Quotes and new business are on 08 600 60 000. Dialling the wrong one puts you in the wrong queue with the wrong team.

The three numbers

  • Sales and quotes: 08 600 60 000
  • Client Care, for changes to an existing policy: 08 600 70 000
  • Help@OUT, the 24/7 assistance line: 08 600 80 000
  • From outside South Africa: +27 12 673 3000
  • You can also start a quote online and OUTsurance will call you back, which saves giving the same details twice

Have this ready before you call for a quote

  • For a car: the registration number, make, model and year, where it parks overnight, the regular driver identity number and licence details, and roughly what you drive a year
  • For a home: the address, the building sum insured, whether there is a thatch roof, and what security is fitted
  • Your current policy schedule, if you have one. A quote compared against your existing excesses and sums insured is meaningful; one compared on price alone is not
  • Be exact about claims in the last five years. A quote given on wrong claims history is worthless, because it will be repriced or the claim declined later

Comparing the quote properly

  • Compare the excess first, not the premium. A cheaper monthly figure with a much larger excess is a different product, not a better deal
  • Check whether the car is insured for retail, market or trade value, and whether the sum insured on the house is the rebuilding cost rather than what you paid
  • Ask which optional covers are in the quoted price: car hire, tyre and rim, excess waiver, portable possessions. They are commonly added and quietly change the comparison
  • The OUTbonus is a cash-back-for-no-claims feature. Ask exactly how long you must be claim-free to qualify and what it pays, and treat it as a benefit rather than a discount on the premium

Quote scams and complaints

  • OUTsurance publishes a scam reporting address, reportscams@out.co.za, monitored 24 hours a day. Use it if someone quotes you in the company name and asks for payment to a personal account
  • A legitimate insurer will not take a first premium by voucher, gift card or instant EFT to an individual. Premiums go by debit order to the insurer
  • For a compliance or FAIS matter, OUTsurance publishes 012 688 6800 and compliance@out.co.za
  • If a policy was mis-sold to you, the FAIS Ombud is on 0860 663 274
