Standard Bank Credit Life Contact Details

Credit life cover on a Standard Bank credit card is sold as the Credit Card Protection Plan. It has its own claims number, separate from the banking contact centre, and it is underwritten by another company.

What this organisation provides

The plan settles an outstanding credit card balance up to R250,000 on death, permanent disability or dread disease, and adds a further R40,000 of cover for those events. It pays up to 18 months of instalments if you are retrenched and up to 12 months if you are temporarily disabled. On accidental death it pays a double benefit, settling the card up to R250,000 and paying an equivalent amount to your estate.

Address and operating information

The premium is recalculated each month against your outstanding balance rather than being fixed, and voluntary plans carry a R4.00 monthly administration charge. The cover is not open ended: natural death cover ends at age 75, while accidental death, retrenchment, dread disease and permanent and temporary disability cover all end at 65. Secondary card holders are not covered for natural death, retrenchment, disability, dread disease or the double accident benefit.

Support and escalation routes

Two exclusions catch people out. Suicide is excluded for the first 24 months of the policy, and a pre-existing medical condition from the previous 12 months is not covered for the first 12 months. On the WhatsApp line, select option 3 for Insurance and then option 1 for Standard Bank Insurance Broker. The plan is underwritten by Liberty Group rather than by the bank, so an unresolved claim dispute is an insurance matter for the National Financial Ombud, while advice given when the plan was sold is a matter for the FAIS Ombud.
