Cancelling a telecoms contract in South Africa depends on your provider and on whether you are inside or outside your minimum term. Every cancellation should be made in writing and confirmed in writing.

Always cancel in writing
This is the single most important step. A cancellation made only by phone leaves you with no evidence, and billing that continues after an unconfirmed cancellation is one of the most common telecoms disputes.
Send it in writing, or use a WhatsApp channel where the exchange is recorded, and get written confirmation back. Keep the reference number, the date, and a copy of the confirmation.
Notice periods
Check the notice period in your contract before cancelling. Notice normally runs from when the provider receives your cancellation, not from when you decided to cancel, so submitting it late in a billing cycle can mean paying for another month.
Cancelling before the end of a minimum term generally attracts an early termination charge. Ask for that amount in writing before you commit, so there is no dispute about it later.
Stop the debit order last, not first
Do not cancel your debit order as a way of cancelling the contract. The contract remains in force, the account falls into arrears, and it can be handed over for collection or listed against your credit record.
Cancel the contract properly first, settle any final amount, and only then stop the debit order once you have written confirmation that the account is closed.
Keeping your number
If you want to keep your mobile number, port it to the new network before cancelling the old contract, rather than cancelling first. Cancelling first can release the number. See mobile number porting contact details.
Complaints and escalation
If a provider continues billing after a confirmed cancellation, or disputes that you cancelled, raise it with them in writing quoting your confirmation. If it is not resolved, escalate to the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) on 012 568 3000 or [email protected].

FAQs
- Can I cancel by phone? Do it in writing, or through a channel that leaves a record, and get written confirmation back.
- Can I just stop my debit order? No. The contract stays in force and the account falls into arrears, which can affect your credit record.
- Will I be charged for cancelling early? Usually, if you are inside your minimum term. Ask for the amount in writing first.
