King Price runs life insurance as a separate line from the car and commercial insurance it is better known for, and it publishes its own mailboxes for it. One number on its contact page, though, is not King Price at all.

Official provider route

When you use the contact form, the first field asks whether you need help with personal, commercial or life insurance, and that choice routes the enquiry. Selecting the wrong one sends a life query to a short term insurance team, so set it deliberately rather than leaving the default. The form then asks what you want to do, with options covering a policy change, finding documents, a policy question, cancelling, submitting or following up a claim, and group scheme cover.

Now the number that is not theirs. The contact page prints 0860 00 25 26 alongside an email address at fraudline.co.za, and both belong to the Insurance Crime Bureau, an industry body, not to King Price. They are for reporting suspected insurance fraud, anonymously if you wish. Do not use them for a claim, a policy question or a complaint about King Price itself, and do not treat that number as a King Price service line.

Product or service support

Life cover is a different product from vehicle insurance in a way that matters when you contact them. A car claim is about an event that just happened and is usually settled in weeks. A life claim is assessed against what was disclosed when the policy was taken out, sometimes years earlier, which is why the questions you are asked at claim stage can feel unrelated to the death or diagnosis.

Eligibility, account or policy requirements

Disclosure is the single thing that decides most disputed life claims. You have a duty to disclose material information honestly when you apply and when you make changes, and that covers medical history, smoking, occupation and dangerous pursuits. An insurer that later finds a material non disclosure may reduce or decline the claim, or void the policy, and it does not have to prove you intended to mislead. If you are unsure whether something is material, disclose it and let the underwriter decide.

Read the schedule for the periods that apply before cover is full. Life policies commonly carry a waiting period before natural death is covered and a separate exclusion period for suicide, and the lengths differ between products. Accidental death is often covered from day one when natural death is not. Keep the policy schedule somewhere your beneficiaries can find it, because a claim cannot start without the policy number, and make sure your nominated beneficiary details are current after any life change.

Escalation route

Complain to King Price first, in writing, using the complaints address above, and get a reference. Insurers are required to have an internal complaints process and to deal with complaints within a reasonable period under the Policyholder Protection Rules.

If it is unresolved, the route depends on what went wrong. A dispute about the claim decision itself, a declined claim or a term applied unfairly, goes to the National Financial Ombud on 0860 800 900. If your complaint is that the product was mis-sold or that the advice you received was inadequate, that is a financial advice matter for the FAIS Ombud on 012 762 5000. The Financial Sector Conduct Authority is the conduct regulator behind both, and it is worth checking that whoever advised you is a licensed financial services provider before you buy.
