What this organisation provides
- SWIFT transfers from Absa Online (Payments, then International funds transfer), the app or a branch. To receive money, give the sender Absa’s SWIFT code ABSAZAJJ, clearing code 632005 and your account number. Absa is on SWIFT gpi, which gives track and trace on cross-border payments.
- Western Union sends and receives through the app, Absa Online or a branch. Absa’s rules exclude non-residents from sending or receiving funds from South Africa, and some countries only receive.
- Multi-currency Cash Passport, a prepaid Mastercard for up to seven currencies that is not linked to your bank account. You can buy up to 60 days before travelling and reuse the card for up to five years.
- Foreign banknotes, which need your ID, passport and a ticket or eTicket in your name, or the vehicle registration certificate for overland travel outside the Common Monetary Area.
- Currency Investment Account in 18 currencies with no monthly fee and no minimum balance, opened on Absa Online by customers aged 18 or older with an ID, a tax number and an Absa current account. Interest earned is taxable in South Africa.
- Non-resident accounts, which need a Letter of Authority for your existing bank, a certified passport copy and a utility bill. Holders of work, study, retirement or spousal permits may qualify for a Temporary Resident Account at a branch.
Absa’s leaving SA page gives adult residents a single discretionary allowance of R1 000 000 per calendar year and under-18s R200 000, plus R25 000 in cash to use on your return. It adds that the Reserve Bank changes these limits from time to time, so confirm them on 0860 151 151 before you travel.
Address and operating information
The retail international banking desk is the RIB Service Centre, 170 Main Street, Johannesburg 2001, open on weekdays from 08:00 to 16:30 and closed on public holidays. Unused banknotes and Cash Passport balances are exchanged at an Absa foreign exchange branch; the Cash Passport can be cashed out commission-free there.
Forex delivery is open to Gold, Premium, Ultimate, Ultimate Plus, Private Bank and Wealth clients and to Absa business transactional customers. Email the signed delivery form with your ID, passport and itinerary to FXdeliveries@absa.africa. Absa says delivery is available for orders of R10 000 or more and free from R30 000, but also that the service covers certain metro areas only. Absa advertises delivery within 24 hours but says weekday orders are processed within two working days, so plan on the longer figure. Deliveries come through CCD Couriers, and you must sign for them yourself with your ID.
