Use 021, not 086, where you can
The hospital publishes both. 086 133 5566 is a shared cost number, which usually costs the caller more than a normal geographic call and often cannot be dialled at all from outside South Africa or from some prepaid packages.
021 850 9000 is the ordinary Cape Town line and reaches the same switchboard. If you are calling from abroad, or a family member is, that is the number to pass on.
The hospital and the day clinic are not the same place
Mediclinic runs a separate Vergelegen Day Clinic alongside the hospital, with its own contact page and its own admissions. Day clinics handle same day procedures where the patient goes home afterwards.
Read your admission letter for which of the two it names. Arriving at the hospital for a procedure booked at the day clinic, or the reverse, is a wasted trip and often a lost theatre slot.
Visiting, admissions and accounts
- Get medical aid pre authorisation before a planned admission and bring the authorisation number. Without it you may carry the account yourself.
- Hospital and doctor accounts are billed separately. The surgeon, anaesthetist and radiologist each invoice independently of the hospital.
- Ask whether each practitioner is contracted in to your scheme, because that is where shortfall bills come from.
- Emergency treatment may not be refused for inability to pay. That obligation applies regardless of medical aid status.
