Absa Activate car insurance: what you get
Absa describes Activate as car, home and household contents insurance you can get online in minutes, with no paperwork. The car cover is an open driver policy, so anyone driving your car is covered. Absa offers up to 40% cash back in monthly rewards for good driving, plus an extra 10% for Absa clients, and says you save more when you insure more. It also includes tracking if your car is stolen or hijacked, and 24-hour emergency assistance.
How to claim on Absa Activate
- If you are injured or need a tow: use the Emergency button in the Activate App or call the Emergency Assist Line on 0800 046 637.
- In the app: tap the Claims icon, choose the vehicle and the type of incident, and capture the date, time and location. Track it under Claims in progress.
- Without the app: call 0860 222 762 during office hours or email activateclaims@absa.africa, with your policy number in the subject line, and an agent calls you back.
- Deadlines: report claims within 31 days of the incident, report the incident to the police within 24 hours, and send the case number when you have it. Do not admit fault or offer payment without the insurer’s permission.
Activate Assist and Home Drive
After an accident, Absa asks you not to leave the scene unless you are taken to hospital by ambulance, and to use the Emergency button or Activate Assist on 0800 046 637. Costs for services you arrange yourself without prior authorisation from the Emergency Assist call centre are not reimbursed. Activate Assist covers five incidents per policyholder per year, each limited to a callout plus one hour of labour, excluding parts, materials and fuel. It includes 24-hour roadside help (towing, fuel delivery, tyre change, jump-start, locksmith and armed response), home help (plumbing, electrical, appliances, pest control, locksmith, glazier and tree felling) and medical assistance. Home Drive gets you and up to four passengers home in your own car, for trips under 50 km and one hour, in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban, Bloemfontein, Mbombela, George, Gqeberha and East London.
Eligibility, account or policy requirements
Activate does not cover motorcycles, caravans or trailers; see Absa Insurance Company in the table above. Put your policy number in the subject line of any email.
Telematics device and panic button
Once your policy is active and at least one premium has been paid, Activate calls you to book installation of the telematics device at an approved fitment centre; take your ID or driving licence. The device and installation are included in your premium, but a missed appointment costs a R600 rebooking fee. Absa says telematics data scores your driving and locates your car after a serious incident, and is not used to approve or reject claims. To test the panic button, hold it for at least three seconds and wait for a call from the Emergency Support line.
