Old Mutual services funeral policies through its general service centre rather than a dedicated funeral line. The contact details below were read from the Old Mutual contact page on 2 September 2026.
Official provider route
- Service centre and WhatsApp: 0860 933 333
- Service enquiries email: [email protected]
- Fraud (Tip-offs Anonymous, 24/7): 0800 222 117 or [email protected]
- Branches: through the branch locator on oldmutual.co.za
0860 933 333 is both the phone line and the WhatsApp number. Save it as a contact, open WhatsApp and send “Hi” to start a self-service conversation. The two channels have different hours, so WhatsApp is often the better route outside call centre times.
There is no separate funeral cover number. If a directory offers you one, it did not come from Old Mutual.
Product or service support
The service centre handles the things that keep a funeral policy valid: premium and debit order changes, updating your address and contact details, changing the lives covered, and nominating or changing a beneficiary.
Keep the beneficiary nomination current. It is the single most neglected part of a funeral policy and the one that causes the longest delays at the worst moment – a payout cannot reach someone who is not nominated, or whose details are years out of date.
We could not verify Old Mutual’s current funeral product terms – cover amounts, premiums and waiting periods – from its website on the date above, because its product pages did not render. Ask for your own policy schedule rather than relying on any figure quoted elsewhere; the schedule is the document that governs your cover.
Eligibility, account or policy requirements
A lapsed policy is the most common reason a funeral claim fails. Funeral cover pays only while premiums are up to date, and a missed debit order can lapse the policy quietly – the family discovers it at the funeral parlour. If a premium bounces, phone 0860 933 333 straight away and ask what is needed to reinstate, and whether reinstatement restarts any waiting period.
Two other things worth confirming in writing while the policy is quiet: which family members are actually covered and up to what age, and whether a waiting period still applies. Waiting periods on funeral cover are normal and lawful, but they differ between policies and between causes of death.
Escalation route
Raise a complaint with Old Mutual first through the customer complaints route on its contact page, quoting the policy number and dates, and keep the reference.
If a claim is declined, ask for the decision in writing, with the specific policy clause relied on. You cannot challenge a reason you have not been given, and a verbal explanation at a call centre is not something you can take further.
Funeral cover is long-term insurance, so an unresolved dispute goes to the National Financial Ombud Scheme, free of charge. Conduct by the insurer or an adviser goes to the Financial Sector Conduct Authority. Old Mutual also publishes an arbitration option on its contact page – read what agreeing to it gives up before you accept, because the ombud route is free and does not require you to waive anything.
Suspected fraud – including anyone selling policies in Old Mutual’s name – goes to Tip-offs Anonymous on 0800 222 117, which is run independently of the company.
