The one national contact common to every South African medical aid is the Council for Medical Schemes (CMS), whose customer care centre is on 0861 123 267. For day-to-day questions, contact your own medical scheme or its administrator; the CMS is the statutory regulator of medical schemes and takes complaints once a scheme’s internal process has been used.

What this regulator handles

The Council for Medical Schemes regulates medical schemes under the Medical Schemes Act. Any person aggrieved by an entity registered or accredited under the Act may complain to the CMS. Its consumer section explains prescribed minimum benefits, chronic benefits and the difference between medical aid and insurance.

Complaints and escalation process

  1. Contact your medical scheme or its administrator and use its internal complaints or dispute process.
  2. If it is not resolved, complete the CMS complaint form, setting out the facts in dispute and the outcome you want.
  3. Email the form to complaints@medicalschemes.co.za with proof that you escalated the matter with your scheme first.

The CMS requires proof of prior escalation with the scheme, so keep your correspondence and reference numbers.
