Check a number before you callComplaint & escalation routes

There is no single bank fraud contact number in South Africa: each bank runs its own fraud line. The numbers below were checked on each bank’s own website on 3 October 2026. Call the line for the bank that holds the affected account, and do that before anything else.

Banking with Discovery Bank? Its fraud line is on the Discovery Bank fraud contact number page. For any other bank, use the number on the back of your card or in the bank’s own app.

What to do as soon as you notice bank fraud

  • Call your bank’s fraud line and ask for the account, the card and your banking profile to be blocked.
  • If your banking app lets you freeze or block the card, do that while you wait on the line.
  • Ask for a reference number for the fraud report. Write it down with the date and time of the call.
  • Change your online banking and app password and your card PIN from a device you trust.
  • Report the matter at a police station and keep the case number. Your bank may ask for it.
  • Check your statements over the following days and report any further transaction you do not recognise.

Which line handles what

Use only the fraud line, the banking app or a branch of your own bank. Every number in the table comes from that bank’s own website, listed under Sources.

  • Standard Bank labels its fraud line as the number for reporting a new fraud incident, and publishes a separate line for lost or stolen cards.
  • Absa publishes a fraud hotline and a separate line for lost or stolen cards.
  • Capitec’s fraud line and WhatsApp number are for personal banking.
  • African Bank’s two numbers are its customer fraud reporting lines for personal banking.
  • GoTyme Bank (the TymeBank website now redirects to it) handles fraud on its customer care line.
  • Nedbank describes its fraud line as available 24/7.

What information to prepare

  • Your ID number and the account or card number involved.
  • The date, time and amount of each transaction you do not recognise.
  • How it happened, if you know: a phone call, an SMS or email link, a lost card or a SIM swap.
  • Any messages, emails or phone numbers the fraudster used.
  • The reference number from any earlier report to the bank.

What a bank fraud agent will never ask for

A bank fraud agent does not need your card PIN, your online banking password, the CVV on the back of your card or a one-time PIN (OTP) to block an account. If a caller asks for any of these, end the call and dial the fraud line yourself, using the table above or the number on the back of your card.

Do not approve a prompt in your banking app that you did not start, and do not install an app or share your screen because a caller asks you to.

If the fraud report is not resolved

Lodge a formal complaint with your bank’s complaints department, quote your fraud reference number and ask for a written answer. If the bank’s final answer does not settle it, you can take the complaint to the financial ombud: see Ombudsman contact details South Africa.

Frequently asked questions

Is there one fraud number for all South African banks?

No. Each bank runs its own fraud line, so call the bank that holds the account or card that was affected.

Which number do I call if my card was lost or stolen?

Absa publishes 0800 11 11 55 or 011 501 5050 for lost or stolen cards, and Standard Bank publishes 0800 020 600. For the other banks in the table, use the fraud line.

Can I report bank fraud from outside South Africa?

Yes. Capitec publishes +27 21 941 1377, FNB +27 11 369 2924 and Standard Bank +27 10 824 2090 for callers outside South Africa.

Will a bank fraud line ask for my PIN or OTP?

No. A fraud agent does not need your PIN, password, CVV or OTP to block an account. Treat any caller who asks for them as a scam and phone the bank yourself.

What is Nedbank’s fraud line?

Nedbank’s fraud line is 0800 110 929, and Nedbank describes it as available 24/7.
